"Justification of protection: Khar Yamaat, Tumentsogt and Turuu Undur Mountains those are located in south part of Kherlen River and adjoining the border of Sukhbaatar of Khentee provinces are last part of Khan-Khentii Mountains which has steppe area. In addition, it is main habitat of Mongolian gazelle. Therefore, in order to protect biodiversity, combination of landscape features and nomadic pastoralism Khar Yamaat natural reserve was established by Parliament Resolution no.28 in 1998. Moreover, they aimed to establish center of research and restoration of natural resource in the natural reserve. Total area is 50.5 thousand hectares. Specific of geography: Khar Yamaat nature reserve is situated in dividing line of borders of southeast side of Bayan-Ovoo soum and northwest of Tumentsogt soum in Khentii and Sukhbaatar provinces at the Mongolian eastern part. Average elevation is 1000m above sea level. The highest point is Tumentsogt Mountain (1358m) and lowest point is 930.8 which are located at Kherlen river valley. Dulaan Mountain which has small forest area located in north part of land, Khar Yamaat Mountain located in middle part and Tumentsogt Mountain located in south part. Absolute height is between 800 and 1358m above sea level and it becomes lower elevation from south to north Kerlen River. Tumentsogt(1358m) and Khar Yamaat (1382m) that are lower elevation compared with other parts are highest points in the nature reserve. According to division of climate it belongs to dry and cool summer and harsh winter. According to the division of natural regions, the nature reserve belongs to sub-region of Khukh and Kherlen lakes in Mongolia-Dornod steppe and plain region. Institutes and Academy of science have been organizing monitoring research in the protected area and its delicate ecosystem since 1980 and it was become monitoring study area. Researchers consider that wild horse can be acclimatized in the nature reserve and it was taken under state special protection. Land of the nature reserve belongs to Sub-basin of Kherlen River that is basin of Pacific Ocean. In addition, there are Yamaat River, Shargyn River and Chuluutyn River in the nature reserve. Moreover, there are over 10 wells such as Yamaat well and Adgyn well. Flora: There are mountain steppe and steppe community in the nature reserve. Around of the Khar Yamaat and Tumentsogt mountains’ is special formation, an ecosystem that is, occurs rarely in steppe region, and it has animals and plants. There are over 160 species of plants and 30 % of them are medicine and food plants. In addition, there are very seldom 10 rare species of plants such as poplar, brown birch, cornelian cherry, and elm in the land. Fauna: There are steppe and mountain steppe animals such as roe deer, red deer, Mongolian gazelle, Tolai hare, squirrel, red fox, hog badger, raccoon dog, Palllas’cat, grey wolf and migration birds in the Mongolian eastern part. A herd of Mongolian gazelle migrates in spring and autumn. "
